Traveling With Children In Africa – The Do’s & Don’ts

without comments

Taking your children to Africa can certainly be challenging at the best of times, so this article looks into what is recommended for children of all ages.

Infants – Aged 0-1

The fundamental issue of taking any young children to Africa is the fact that much of the continent is malarial. Infants of this age are far too young to be taking anti-malarial drugs and it’s therefore better taking them to a malaria free zone such as the Eastern cape in South Africa or the islands of the Seychelles.

Small Children – Aged 2-5

One of the major problems parents still have with their children here is their ability to regulate their own body temperatures. On a positive however they are at the age now where they are able to take anti-malarial drugs which opens up the possibility of now taking them on Namibia safaris, Botswana Safaris and most other safaris on the continent. Virtually all lodges will accept children of this age and at a reduced price as well. The only issue is that due to their age, many lodges will not take them on one of their safaris.

Children – Aged 6-12

At this age all children are able to go on safari, so look out for some of the best options in Tarangire  or the Serengeti. Not only will many lodges in Africa accept children but they will do at a discounted price. The only issue is that many children of this age are still not allowed on safaris unless they are private tours which can prove too expensive for most people

Teenagers – Aged 13-18

Lodges and camps throughout Africa will accept teenagers although many of these camps will in fact charge full price which is certainly something to consider when booking. It’s important to take into consideration that teenagers like to do their own thing when they are away whether that’s climbing Mt Kilimanjaro or just relaxing by themselves on the beach in Zanzibar. This is the perfect chance to see how your kids react to the big wide world, it’s a wonderful and unique oppoertunity to spend with your offspring.
