europe rail tickets
Is it cheaper to buy point-to-point rail tickets in europe or in advance through raileurope?

I am asking about short trips like florence-rome, is it cheaper if I buy it in advance from rail europe or at the station?

Also, is it necessary to have a reservation for journey such as rome-nice?

Thanks!

Generally, you’re better off getting point-to-point tickets through the national train system than through a booking agent like raileurope. If you buy tickets here in Italy at least one day in advance, you can get the discounted Amica fare whic will save you up to 20% on the faster trains.

You don’t necessarily have to have a reservation for Rome to Nice, but it depends on the specific connections and trains you take. There are no direct trains on this route. If your connections involve a higher speed train, then you could make a reservation for that train, but there are no reservations possible for the regional trains. Some trains are mandatory reservations.
