Euro Train Pass

Did anyone find Eurail tickets to be a ripoff?
I purchased a 3 day Eurail pass to Italy for my wife and I, which cost 306 Euro. I travelled from Rome-Florence, Florence-Venice, and Venice-Milan (a typical tourist itinerary in my opinion). Each segment required a 30 Euro supplement since we travelled on the high-speed trains, bringing our total cost to 396 Euro. When I priced out the trips I took individually, the total cost for the EXACT SAME TRIPS, in the exact same class (1st) would have been 256 Euro, which in USD is a RIPOFF of about $200. Eurail has yet to respond, to my inquiry, but I don’t expect good results. My advice to anyone thinking of doing this is to get on the Trenitalia website and price out your itinerary before you purchase Eurail passes. There is a reason that ONLY people visiting from OUTSIDE of Europe can purchase these…because the locals would know they are a tourist RIPOFF! Has anyone else gone through this?
I think your criticism is a bit too harsh. You could have figured out yourself that each of your routes is only about 250 km – not a big distance even in Europe. It’s not the fault of Eurail that you picked that itinerary, as well as you wanted to use the fastest trains available. Probably you could have gone Palermo – Napoli – Milano – Roma (i don’t know if your ticket was restricted to Italy only; maybe you could also have gone Roma – Madrid – Paris – Berlin) with your ticket as well, and that way your Eurail-ticket would have saved you money.
As a european I can say that Eurail is a PRIVILEGE to tourists from overseas – an option I don’t have. If you use it “the wrong way” it’s not Eurail’s fault. And if you don’t want to do some research yourself in advance you better contact a travel agent the next time.
Sorry for this comment, but I think your criticism is inadequate.
