Eurail-Italy pass questions?
I just got an Eurail-Italy pass in USA. I have following questions: 1. How can I make reservations now in US? 2. Train schedule in US eurail website is diffrent from that of TrenItalia. Does that mean I can not take some trenitalia train? any real Eurail-Italy travel experience help are cordially welcome. Thanks
Eurail does not operate trains; they just sell passes that can be used on the various trains here. Trenitalia is the company operating the trains. You can make reservations from the website: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html or you can wait until you’re here and make the reservations at the station. At most times, you don’t really need to make reservations far in advance. Exceptions are if you want to take a train into Venice during Carnevale – it’s best to make reservations a couple of days in advance, and around Easter when everyone is traveling.
The slower regional trains which make a lot of stops do not require or accept reservations – you’ll be able to use your pass without anything else. If you’re taking one of the higher speed or night trains that do require reservations, then you’ll need to select the Global Pass option from the fare selection menu. typically, you will have to pay about a 10 euro supplement for the reservation on each train. Berths on night trains will be more.
The trains are about to go on the winter schedule – the train schedules are updated in June and December typically. The US site probably has not caught up with the new schedule which is currently being posted on the Trenitalia website. You can use the pass on all the Trenitalia trains.
