Why does it cost extra money to book tickets after having “Eurail selectpass saver”?

Hi,
We are planning a trip to europe and I found that there are passes which fits us. However, when I check the fares on their websites and check the “have a rail pass”; I still get about 50Euro fare for a 4-5hr journey. Why is this so. I assumed that this pass will allow us to travel (within the 5/6 day-limit) anywhere without ever buying another ticket.

Can someone explain this?

Thanks.

Hi from France !

That’s right, rail passes allow you to travel by train without paying for another ticket. However, an extra is to be paid for many european trains. For instance, a TGV ticket price (bought in France) includes the ticket itself, plus an extra charge, depending on the period (off or peak). Same thing for other hi speed trains like ICE (Germany), Pendolino (Italy), EuroStar (France/Belgium to UK) and Thalys (France to Belgium, Netherlands and Germany). Note that reservation is sometimes compulsory, sometimes not, but considered as an extra.

Avoid peak hours (e.g. friday afternoon) in order to pay the

I know it sounds crazy (well, it is !), but be sure that no extra will be collected for classic trains ! The best is to check with every company before booking or planning your trip.

I know that the european rail system is complex, we hope things will be clarified in a few years as every company has its own rules. Anyway, enjoy your trip !
